We present a test for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy horror films: Sit down with your loved one and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut via Hulu. At first glance, it could look like typical biological terror, but within Together exists a profound contemplation about the ways we decide to love our partners.
An Introductory Film Exploring Partnership Complexities
Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for over ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a unique chemistry to their roles, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.
The plot commences when the couple move from the metropolis to the countryside for Millie’s job. A commonly used story element, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the conventions end. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.
A Supernatural Catalyst
While walking near their country house, a storm hits, and the protagonists fall into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence begins influencing the pair. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding simple connection.
The whole movie is a slow burn horror experience, interspersing bits of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes amidst something disturbing). The director orchestrates these parts neatly and wraps them up in a consistently growing aura of dread.
Nuanced Portrayals
A great deal of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career inexorably rises.
In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and far away from his support system. He is terrified of the concept of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is intensified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for transportation.
Shanks’ smartest move in this movie refrains from painting either of his characters the clear bad guy.
Both characters grapple with the kind of problems that come with any relationship a decade in. Fundamentally, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their future together.
Thematic Depth
While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the allegory avoids being hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other symbiotically.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.
Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could act as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the finale plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply turn to your other half and state, “We could get through that together”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can undertake right now.
Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu now.
